The KZN Science Centre Chief Executive Officer, Ms Candice Potgieter, has received a Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans Award at a ceremony held in Johannesburg on Tuesday the 11th of June 2013.

This award recognises young leaders aged 35 and under, who have made a significant contribution to society and who have the potential to shape the future of South Africa.

“I am most sincerely honoured to have been nominated,” said Potgieter, adding that, “while this award recognises my individual abilities, I believe that it also acknowledges the role of The KZN Science Centre in empowering and educating the youth of today in ensuring a science literate generation of tomorrow.”

Since taking on the role of CEO, Potgieter has revived and realigned The KZN Science Centre to ensure the sustainability and viability of the organisation as a non-profit organisation in accomplishing the centre’s mandate of providing quality education and science awareness to both learners and the general public. As a result, the KZN Science Centre’s beneficiaries have improved from 40 000 in 2010/11 to over 110 000 in 2011/12. Despite this significant improvement, Potgieter is determined to grow this beneficiary list to ensure that the entire province of KZN and its children will in one way or another benefit from the work that the centre is undertaking.

Potgieter believes that one of the most important aspects of using education to empower people is making sure of the accessibility of this education and thus looking forward she will be using this award to encourage more partnership, collegiality and conversations around education (more specifically science and mathematics education) in KZN.

The full article of her accomplishment will be published in the Mail and Guardian 200 Young South Africans insert this Friday the 14th of June 2013 and will appear on the Mail and Guardians 200 Young South African’s website for 2013.
