Three awards will be given to women who are currently involved in full-time postgraduate study or research leading to a masters or doctoral degrees in an area where participation by women is traditionally low. These awards will recognize outstanding ability and potential in research.

Application criteria:
Grants will be awarded to young women who have registered for a degree in one of the following areas:
• Architecture,
• Astronomy,
• Astrophysics
• Computer/Information Sciences,
• Engineering,
• Mathematics,
• Statistics, or
• Physics.

Adjudication criteria:
• Quality and feasibility of the proposed plan of study or research and proposed time schedule.
• A demonstrable need for the specialized knowledge and skills that she plans to acquire.
• Academic and professional qualifications, including research publication record.
• Candidate’s commitment to the advancement of women and girls in South Africa/Africa as demonstrated by her previous work and her proposed study or research.

Award content:
Masters R50 000 (X3)
Doctoral R50 000(X3)

Use of the award:
The award can be used for normal academic registration and tuition fees, and also to expand the experience of the successful candidate. It can be used to purchase additional equipment required for the completion of the master’s degree, or to enable her to spend three to six months at an international research facility to improve the outcome of their studies.

Application procedure:
Application should clearly indicate which category of fellowship is being applied for.

Documentation that must accompany nominations:
• A nomination letter
The organisation making the nomination should write a letter motivating the nomination. This should include information on the contribution of the candidate’s research to advancing science and building the knowledge base, their involvement with mentorship/coaching programmes, and the exploitability of their research outputs (i.e. the possibility of using research results to develop or improve products, processes and services).

• Proof of research publication record
A list and copies of any of five relevant research publications.

• Curriculum vitae
The candidate’s CV should provide complete relevant personal and professional data other awards received, and a full list of any research outputs (papers presented or published etc).

• A letter of intent and candidate statement
The letter must indicate a desire to be considered for the fellowship.
The statement must indicate how the candidate qualifies for the fellowship, including the following information:
- The quality and feasibility of the proposed plan of study or research and proposed schedule.
- A demonstrable need for the specialised knowledge and skills that she plans to acquire.
- Academic and professional qualifications.
- A demonstrable commitment to the advancement of women and girls in South Africa or the candidate’s country of origin, as evidenced by her previous work and her proposed study or research.

• Letters of reference
Letters of reference from three people discussing the candidate’s professional competence and other personal or professional qualities or interests that make the candidate especially qualified to receive a fellowship. Each letter of reference should contain the following information:
- The candidate’s relationship to the referee.
- The technical accomplishments and relative standing of the candidate among her peers.
- The candidate’s interest and experience in applying her expertise to the improvement of the quality of life of women.
- The contact details of the referee.
