KZN ScienCentre prepares to launch Early Childhood Development Room on 1
December

The KZN ScienCentre at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping will be augmenting
its already impressive lineup of fun, interactive and educational activities
with the launch of its Early Childhood Development Room next month (1
December). Aimed at children between the ages of 0 – 5 years old, the new
room will be fully equipped with specially designed toys and workshops, as
well as fully trained facilitators, all geared towards boosting children’s
early cognitive development.

Cordoned off from the rest of the KZN ScienCentre, the Early Childhood
Development Room will be a calm and quiet area reserved for the exclusive
use of children aged 0 – 5, and their parents. The 40m2 room will feature a
Unique Soft Play Area, which will include learning activities, educational
exhibits, a workshop area, oversized building blocks, DSTV Kiddy Channels, a
Story Time area and a baby gym.

Workshops that will be offered include the Science of Planting, Telling the
Time, as well as many others. According to Candice Potgieter, General
Manager of the KZN ScienCentre, said that “children who come and spend time
in the Early Childhood Development Room will be able to learn cognitive
skills using the many interactive play tools and by taking part in the
fun-filled and educational workshops and activities. The Early Childhood
Development Room can play a central role in a child’s cognitive progress.
Children in the 0 – 5 years age group are in their formative years, so
social and intellectual development is of utmost importance to their
future”.

Open daily between 09h00 and 18h00, and with a minimal entry fee of R15
which includes the use of all toys and participation in all workshops and
activities, Potgieter said that “the Early Childhood Development Room allows
the KZN ScienCentre to cater for an even broader spectrum of children. We
are really excited about the launch, and are sure that many children will
soon be benefitting from the unique and safe venue that we will be
offering”.

Children older than 5 years will also be pleased to hear that the KZN
ScienCentre at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping will be offering a ‘Science
Makes Sense’ holiday programme during the upcoming December holidays. The
month-long programme (10 December 2011 – 10 January 2012) will offer a
multitude of fun, interactive and educational activities that will explore
our five senses between 11h00 and 14h00 daily, exhibiting how science is
involved in what we experience everyday through sight, touch, taste, hear
and smell. As well as the awesome holiday programme, the KZN ScienCentre at
the Gateway Theatre of Shopping will also be offering visitors the chance to
experience its famous 40-seater domed planetarium, as well as its over 150
interactive science and technology exhibits.
