KZN ScienCentre hosts 1443 visitors during Easter Holidays

The KZN ScienCentre at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping was abuzz with activity during the recent Easter holidays, hosting 1443 visitors who took full advantage of the Centre’s fun-filled, educational and interactive Cool Science Investigators (CSI) holiday programme, as well as their famous state-of-the-art domed planetarium. The month of April will also see the KZN ScienCentre continuing their Schools Programme by offering a curriculum-linked series of interactive workshops and activities relating to Mechanics.

Nazley Kast, KZN ScienCentre Acting Education Manager, said that “having brought the curtain down on a very successful Easter holiday programme, we will continue to promote science awareness amongst the youth with our schools programme. We hope to those who visit the KZN ScienCentre see science and technology in a different light thanks to the real life applications that we use to illustrate and exemplify these subjects”.

The Mechanics themed programmes that are on offer this month include such workshops as Exploring Bernoulli’s Principle (a practical workshop demonstrating the effects of fast moving air and its applications, eg. aeroplanes’ ability to fly), Vector Hunt (an interactive workshop where learners work in teams and use knowledge of vectors and scalars to complete a hunt), Knowing Newton’s Laws (practical demonstrations by groups of learners of the effects of Sir Isaac Newton’s 3 laws of motion), as well as many others.

The KZN ScienCentre will also soon be launching their ‘Get A Grip On Science’ charity initiative. Here, visitors to the Centre’s premises at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping will make a nominal donation of R5.00 to place their handprint and name on a massive purpose-built canvas. When the milestone of 5000 handprints is reached the KZN ScienCentre will do a random draw and select one of the participants who will receive a Science Resource Kit for their class or a school of their choice, which relates to the many educational programme topics addressed at the Centre, e.g. Biotechnology, Astronomy, Electricity, to name but a few. The winner will also win a free trip to the KZN ScienCentre for their own school or for a school of their choice. Kast said that “watch this space as well as our Facebook page for details about when the campaign will be launched – it is for a good cause and it will be very exciting to see the canvas filling up with thousands of handprints!”

The KZN ScienCentre, a Non Profit Organization (NPO #064-359-NPO), is situated at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga and offers a great variety of educational and event facilities following an extensive revamp in October 2009.
