The KZN (KwaZulu-Natal) Science Centre proudly congratulates Cwakeme High School, located in northern KZN, Hluhluwe, on achieving a phenomenal 98,2% pass rate in the 2012 National Senior Certificate Examinations. A stark contrast to the dismal 28% pass rate in 2011.

After a fire destroyed most of the school’s buildings and facilities, the office of the Honourable KZN MEC of Education Mr Senzo Mchunu adopted the school with the aim of rebuilding it and more importantly, uplifting the confidence and spirit of the learners and educators. Hon. MEC Mchunu proudly stated: “I am not a minister of promises, but my department delivers.”

In September 2012, the office of the MEC, the KZNDOE and the KZN Science Centre, held a highly successful intervention at the school in order to actively engage the Grade 12 learners into the world of science.

The KZN Science Centre’s Education Officers and Outreach Team hosted exciting workshops based on the requirements set out within the Life Sciences genre of the CAPS document. Informative practicals on Biotechnology, such as the interactive, ever popular DNA Extraction Workshop, gave learners the opportunity to play “Scientist” for the day.

In the spirit of giving, the KZN Science Centre, in conjunction with SciQuip, donated a mobile science unit to Cwakeme High School, fully equipped with the necessary scientific equipment needed to conduct the practicals required by the curriculum for Life Sciences. This mobile science unit is to be utilized by learners, starting from Grade 8 levels right up to the senior Grade 12 level.

“Introducing learners from a basic level to the fascinating world of science has encouraged them to take on these subjects at the senior levels and also motivate them to perform at their best and achieve continual success all the way through to their final matric examinations, cited Candice Potgieter, CEO of the KZN Science Centre. “This kind of intervention most certainly bears fruit as proven by the superb performance of the 2012 Grade 12 “born-free” learners.”

The KZN Science Centre’s objective was to motivate and encourage these young learners to get excited about science and to inspire them to strive towards careers within the field. Judging from the marvellous results produced by these learners, this goal was achieved at Cwakeme High School.
