Written by kznscience on . Posted in News Press Releases

It’s that time of the year again! The KZN Science Centre is abuzz with preparation for hosting the KwaZulu-Natal leg of the awesome and exhilarating First Lego League competition, proudly sponsored by global software giant SAP (PTY) LTD, on the 9th of November 2013. Tsunami’s, vicious storms, and quivering quakes have been wreaking havoc across the globe. In 2013, Over 200,000 children from over 70 countries will investigate the magnitude of this year’s challenge, NATURE’s FURYSM. Learners will research global natural disaster phenomena & come up with creative solutions to help people prepare, stay safe, and rebuild their communities after a natural disaster powers its way through it. NATURE’s FURYSM is guaranteed to be a whirlwind of fun, excitement and innovation!

The three judging areas are Core values, Robot design and Project. For the KZN leg, The KZN Science Centre has an array of talented, highly qualified and friendly judges. They range from software and mechanical engineers, to environmental, geological and biological scientists, to project managers and quality directors. Judges will be looking for implementation of the core values which are the corner stone of the competition and helps it to distinguish F.L.L from other similar programs. Strategy in programming the robot and its ability to complete tasks are some  of the criteria that will be looked at in the Robot Design section. Project judging will involve the innovative solutions the teams come up with in an effort to solve an issue faced by the aged, in response to the NATURE’s FURYSM challenge.

The Chief Executive Officer of The KZN Science Centre, Ms Candice Potgieter, is excited about this year’s challenge. “What separates First Lego League from other competitions is its ability to engage the minds of learners in thinking about global issues and giving them the tools to develop their analytical and problem solving skills. Thanks to our sponsor SAP (PTY) LTD, our learners can discover the numerous ways in which Science and Technology can be used to help mitigate some of the biggest problems plaguing society today. The fact that it is LOADS of fun is just an added bonus!”

Brace yourself for NATURE’s FURY!
